We are excited to announce the addition of "Satsuma Mandarin (Citrus unshiu)" to our Premier Edition lineup. This piece is one of my signature works, presenting at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in 2016 and the National Museum of Nature and Science in Ueno in 2017, as part of the "Flora Japonica" exhibition showcasing Japan's endemic species.
The Satsuma Mandarin is believed to originate from the Satsuma region in Japan (present-day Kagoshima Prefecture), on Nagashima Island, and was named in the latter half of the Edo period.
Indicatively, the English name "Satsuma" is used by the British to refer to mandarins. This name is derived from the friendly relations established between the Satsuma Domain and Britain in the late Edo period, when Satsuma sent mandarin orange seedlings to Britain.
