Premier Editionのラインアップに「温州ミカン(Citrus unshiu )」を新たに加えました。2016年英王立キューガーデン(KEW)、2017年上野国立科学博物館で開催された日本固有種展「フローラジャポニカ(Flora Japonica）」に出展した私の代表作の一つです。
温州ミカンは原産地は日本の薩摩地方（現在の鹿児島県）の長島であると考えられており、江戸時代の後半にその名が名付けられました。
ちなみに英語名は「Satsuma mandarin」で、イギリス人はみかんを「Satsuma(サツマ）」と呼びます。その由来は幕末に薩摩藩とイギリスで友好関係が成立した際に、薩摩藩からみかんの苗がイギリスにおくられたことがきっかけなのだそうです。
We are excited to announce the addition of "Satsuma Mandarin (Citrus unshiu)" to our Premier Edition lineup. This piece is one of my signature works, exhibited at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in 2016 and the National Museum of Nature and Science in Ueno in 2017, as part of the "Flora Japonica" exhibition showcasing Japan's endemic species.
The Satsuma Mandarin is believed to originate from the Satsuma region in Japan (present-day Kagoshima Prefecture), on Nagashima Island, and was named in the latter half of the Edo period.
Interestingly, the English name "Satsuma" is used by the British to refer to mandarins. This name is derived from the friendly relations established between the Satsuma Domain and Britain in the late Edo period, when Satsuma sent mandarin orange seedlings to Britain.
